The health learning needs of post liver transplant patientsen_US
The number of post liver transplant patients has increased over the past decade in Hong Kong. Patient education has become very important for this group of patients, so a survey was conducted to identify their learning needs in a regional hospital in Hong Kong. Informants who had had liver transplants in Hong Kong were invited to participate in the survey and 157 participants were recruited. Data were collected with the Hong Kong Perceived Learning Needs Scale (2004). The findings showed that the patients felt that the most important information they could receive was about "complications and symptoms". Information about "medication" was ranked the second most important. Demographic variables such as age, gender, education and the year of the liver transplant were clearly related to the learning needs. Through the use of Hong Kong Perceived Learning Needs Scale (HKPLNS) local performed liver transplant patients expressed multiple learning needs. Young and highly educated men had many more learning needs as compared with middle-aged and less educated men. Women, whether young or middle-aged, all had high learning needs, especially in "support and care in the community" and "illness-related concerns". Based on these findings, it is suggested that a patient education programme be put in place to fulfil these learning needs.en_US
