Abstract: In various industries, new product development (NPD) is now most critical and can make or break a firm's success. Industrially, firms face the challenge of coping with rapid technological changes, shorter product life cycles, and higher complexity in business systems, which lead to low success rate in NPD. Improving the performance of NPD is one of the primary concerns within companies. Furthermore, research has indicated that strengthening Knowledge Transfer (KT) is a means of enhancing NPD performance. With the varying nature of the tasks, different types of knowledge using different KT techniques must be focused on. However, from previous studies on KT, KT is just regarded as an isolated issue and is not classified into different types. Furthermore, the evaluation of the stage-gate model in NPD is based on Expert Judgement, which is subjective and affected by personal beliefs. Especially in the Automotive Industries, as the complexity in the NPD environment is increasing, global enterprises have to launch more car platforms in less time and with lower costs to maintain their long term competitiveness. A new integrated KT model is proposed in this study which adopts Nancy Dixon's different types of knowledge transfer with David Delong's Knowledge retention model. A case study in the automotive area was carried out to identify the positive impact on NPD process performance by implementing the new integrated model. To further improve the performance of the NPD, this research also uses the Analytical Hierarchical Process to normalize and prioritize the passing criteria from expert judgment in the stage-gate process. By using the AHP result, benchmarking on the passing criteria from the 1st two stages of the stage gate on different NPD performance can be developed. This empirical study identifies the appropriateness of different KT types in the first two stages of the stage-gate model in providing inputs to enhance the NPD performance by combining Nancy Dixon's different types of knowledge transfer. The Knowledge retention model and the integrated model for KT between NPD projects, can be optimized according to specific task nature in an NPD projects.
