Abstract: In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the 2015-2030 period. 17 Global Goals have been set and 230 indicators have been identified to measure these goals. The UN Nation members have to produce progress reports of their SDG implementation in various stages between 2015 and 2030. One of the key scientific issues identified for the SDGs is to develop effective approaches to visualize the status and trends in indicators and to communicate with end users and policy makers. To meet the requirement for visualization of UN SDG indicators, it is necessary to design different maps consist of different representation variables and evaluate the effectiveness of representation variables in web-based visualization stage. This study aims at design effective static symbols, static maps and dynamic atlas for visualization of UN SDG indicators, as well as develop a prototype system for visualization and a dynamic atlas evaluation system for evaluating effectiveness. Firstly, the representational requirements for map-based visualization are identified. Secondly, the representational variables available in a digital environment are examined and the effectiveness of the variables in visualization were examined. Thirdly, the development of a prototype dynamic atlas for the effective visualization and communication of SDG indicators is reported. In this atlas, the five "objective primitives" for interactive visualization (i.e., identify, compare, rank, associate and delineate) are adopted as a basis for the development of the analysis capacity, and panel-driven interaction is employed to ensure flexible visualization. Fourthly, a desktop dynamic atlas evaluation system was developed for the evaluating the effectiveness of representation variables in visualization. The results of evaluation provide the reference and default for the prototype system. In this research study, a sets of static maps and dynamic atlas were designed. In addition, the results of evaluation suggest that, 1) For static symbols, the "single color hue = 0", "color hue from 120 to 0", "circle point", "line pattern" symbols are more effective for visualization; 2) For dynamic variable "Duration", "1.0s" is more effective; 3) For view angle and flight route, the "45 degree" and "line 1" are most effective.
