dc.title | Laser welding of metal matrix composite materials | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Metal matrix composites ( MMCs ) using particulate or whisker reinforcement have considerable potential for providing lightweight components exhibiting high strength, high stiffness, good wear resistance and improved elevated temperature properties compared to the matrix alloys. However, the joining as well as the welding problem of these materials limited their applications in automobile, marine, precision engineering and transportation industries. Laser welding has been considered as an non-conventional and a promising process for the joining of MMC materials. In this dissertation, laser lap joint welding of an aluminium based metal matrix composite was investigated using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser.. The results showed that pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding techniques could be used to join Al/SiCp metal matrix composites. The threshold intensity model of welding could be employed to predict the depth of penetration as well as the weld profile. Microstructural examination showed that brittle aluminium carbides were formed in the Fusion Zone which were harmful to mechanical properties of the material. However, proper control of the laser welding was possible to avoid excessive and large carbides formation. Defects such as cracking and porosity were found in the welding, but welding under the optimum conditions the amount of defects could be greatly reduced. | en_US |
