dc.title | Gender differences in the academy awards acceptance speeches | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | This MA project investigates the linguistic differences between men and women in the Academy Award acceptance speeches. It is a corpus-based study with two corpora, one of the leading actors' acceptance speeches and one of the leading actresses'. There are 125 speech transcripts (64 of men and 61 of women) with a total of 24938 words. The data was analyzed with the corpus software Wmatrix. In this study, Wmatrix was employed mainly to generate keyword and key POS lists. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches have been adopted to explore the characteristic patterns of keywords and key POS. Results were compared between these two corpora to identify whether men and women differ in language use as well as to see whether those differences are consistent with findings of previous studies. Findings reveal that the most key words both in the male and female corpus are thank, my, me, and, Academy, to, who, and film. The most key POS in the male and female corpus have similarities and differences. Meanwhile, the preference of POS was investigated. By comparing the keyness value, we could found which gender prefers to employ which POS. | en_US |
