dcterms.abstractPeople adopt different strategies or techniques to communicate in spoken or written discourse around the world. Discourse is necessary in communicating thoughts and ideas. In order to understand any discourse, it must achieve coherence and cohesion. The purpose of the paper is to explain and describe the cohesion and coherence in textuality of based on the work of Halliday and Hasan (1976). By analyzing a newsletter from an EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) secondary school in Hong Kong, this paper emphasize the essential of adopting these strategies in written discourse. Also, the author built a simple corpus of the data to show the evidences in this paper. The students' and teachers' writings showed clear evidence of coherence and cohesion, and indicate the use of grammatical and lexical devices. It is noticed that the writers adopted different strategies to convey messages to readers in the newsletter columns.en_US
