The effectiveness of different captioned movie genres on learning phrasal verbs: a case study of a group of secondary school form 4 students in Hong Kongen_US
The present research builds upon previous studies which gave mostly conclusive evidence confirming the effectiveness of watching captioned movies on language learning and goes beyond to differentiating movie genres which may be more effective in assisting language acquisition from those which may be less. Such differentiation is particularly useful and valuable for teachers when selecting an ideal material to be incorporated into their classroom often with a group of students having their own unique taste, especially in face of the vast amount of options available today. The experiments were conducted in a mainstream secondary school in Hong Kong involving 17 Secondary 4 (Year 10) students whose first language were Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin). Findings in the pre/post tests showed that what students like the most may not necessarily work the best for them - watching comedy, while being most liked by students, did not lead to significant improvement in vocabulary acquisition; viewing musical comedy (the second most liked) and crime drama (the least liked) yielded significant improvements. Findings from the interview further revealed that while both teachers and students were aware of the value of captioned movies to language learning, the valuable resource was still underexploited due to various constraints. Much work is needed to assist teachers and students in putting ideas into practice.en_US
