dc.title | A study on the variation of Hong Kong English accent among different age groups of native Cantonese ESL speakers | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | This research project investigates and compares the phonological features of Hong Kong English (HKE) produced by forty native Cantonese ESL speakers in four age groups ranging from 20 to 50 or above years of age across a generation in Hong Kong. It was found that, in every age group, there were great intra- and inter-speaker variations in their pronunciations influenced by various factors, including L1 transfer effect, exonormative models, and developmental effect. Some of the phonological features of HKE could hinder international communication. A discussion of the possible educational implications of the findings for L2 acquisition pedagogy concludes this paper. | en_US |
