| Abstract: | Apart from sole proprietorship, most businesses involve with more than one partner. According to the Hong Kong Government website, over 98% of businesses in Hong Kong are small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Nevertheless, many of them did not survive and were dissolved within the first few years of operation. For any business to succeed, having a good partnership is fundamental and essential, especially when the partners are working hard together to achieve the same goals. Most importantly, trust plays a key role in a successful business partnership. The partnership is not sustainable when trust is missing, and tension builds up. Taking on a comprehensive view on mistrust between partners and leveraging the Social Exchange Theory, this research intends to examine the antecedents that cause partners' mistrust and if this mistrust can lead to business tension through three different perspectives, namely; focal partner's perception of the fellow partner's personal characteristics, focal partner's economic and social satisfaction with partnership, and focal partner's personality. To validate my theoretical model, over 340 business partners participated in this survey. The findings support most of the hypotheses. In particular, the extent to which the antecedents that cause partners' mistrust, and the consequences of mistrust are examined and validated. The results offer important implications enhancing Social Exchange Theory on mistrust and for people who are in the process of forming a new business partnership. |
