dc.title | An investigation of the factors influencing Hong Kong employees' willingness to relocate to the PRC | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Economic recession in recent years has affected most of workers in Hong Kong. With the close relationship between Hong Kong and the PRC, those in search of jobs might be expected to begin to look beyond Hong Kong's borders and start considering working in the PRC if opportunities arise. This study focuses on exploring the effects of factors on the willingness of Hong Kong workers to relocate to the PRC including age, length of time in the job, previous experience of living/working in the PRC, job involvement, work involvement, salary, family status, spouse's working status and individual's employment status. Besides, the influence of individual characteristics such as gender and education level upon Hong Kong workers' willingness to relocate to the PRC are also explored. These factors are mainly classified into three categories as time-based variables, situational variables and individual characteristics. The results of a survey-based investigation suggest that only the variables representing the presence of a working spouse, high school age children, and marital status were found to be statistically significant among in influencing an individual's willingness to relocate to the PRC. Suggestions are made to the government of the HKSAR and the PRC to place more efforts to trigger the unemployed Hong Kong workers to relocate to the PRC, and to companies on attracting and assisting employees in making their relocation decisions. | en_US |
