dcterms.abstractThe development of vertical greenery system, or commonly known as green wall, is becoming more widespread as sustainability is increasingly emphasized in urban planning and development. Different size of green walls incorporated with a variety of soil media and plants are commonly observed in Hong Kong. The benefits of green walls, other than being an aesthetic element in the urban area, also encompass stormwater control, wastewater degradation, improvement in the quality of life in terms of comfortability and air and acoustics parameters. Studies are also conducted on greywater degradation with green walls and aquatic plants. This paper examines the feasibility of adopting two aquatic plant species, Hydrilla verticillata and Ludwigia glandulosa, in constructing the green walls for the purposes of greywater degradation and noise attenuation. Although the greywater degradation performance was still unstable, as the lab-scale green wall reactor system is still undergoing the acclimatization stage, the noise attenuation performance of the green wall was promising in terms of noise isolation performance, absorption coefficients and reverberation time. The lab-scale green wall was proved to be capable to reduce noise pollution from road traffic, industry and human conversation. It is believed that with the continuously rapid development of the vertical greenery system, the urban biodiversity can be enhanced with the versatile applications of vertical greenery system.en_US
