Abstract: Hong Kong is a high-density city with a large number of student patterns that significantly affect the existing transportation system. The student group has relatively fixed time and space distributions on weekdays with a precise travel peak period, which is valuable for our research. This article used the Multinomial Logit (MNL) model based on the random utility model to study the impact of individual attributes, household attributes and travel characteristics on the Hong Kong students' travel-to-school transportation mode choice. And the study area is the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. According to the 9090 samples of trip data extracted from the Travel Characteristics Survey (TCS) 2011, six variables were selected to study their influence on students' choice among six different transportation modes, which are MTR, bus, private car, school bus, walking and minor mode group. Then, the SAS software was adopted to analyze the data by using MNL model. The results illustrate that all selected attributes have significant impacts on students' travel-to-school mode choice in Hong Kong except gender. And it has found that relative to walking, as age increases, more students choose other modes of transportation except school bus. Also, monthly household income has an effect on the choice of specific modes of transportation, such as private car, school bus and minor modes. In addition, students with private vehicles available at home are more likely to take the private car and school bus to school. According to the results, students with family members' escort prefer to travel to school by MTR, bus, private car and minor modes. Finally, some policy implications were suggested based on the study results. And it is expected that the research will provide some help in improving commuting traffic in Hong Kong.
