Abstract: | Global climate change causes an increase in the sea level. Increasing heavy rainfalls, and the reduced ability for land to absorb water have made cities more vulnerable to suffer flooding. My dissertation is part of a research project entitled Urban Nature Labs (Unalab), aiming to solve challenges faced by many cities. The research aims to study the possibility of storing stormwater using Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) storage tanks under roads and street pavements. This FRP water storage tank acts as a significant role in "sponge city" development to collect, store stormwater in rainy days and recycle it in dry seasons. It helps cities quickly drain the water from roads and streets to reduce traffic jam. Moreover, the stormwater may be later recycled for landscaping, cleaning, domestic use and other application to achieve environmental purposes. The FRP underground storage tank is a container made of new composite, glass fiber reinforced plastic, which is manufactured by winding glass fiber as a reinforcing agent and resin as a binder through computer control. FRP storage tanks have the characteristics of anti-corrosion, high strength, light weight and long life, and are widely used in machinery, parmaceutical, food, petrochemical and other industries. Finite element analysis method can be used to optimize the structure of existing FRP storage tank to achieve the purpose of heat preservation, weight reduction, structural strength improvement, and cost reduction. The mechanical performance of FRP underground storage tank has been rarely studied in existing literature due to the limited scientific research capabilities of researchers in composite material production enterprises. In the experimental analysis, it is mainly to obtain accurate estimates of the strain, stress for FRP water storage tank in DTS30 machine in different pressure conditions. Based on numerical analysis, a systematic investigation was conducted on the mechanical performance of FRP underground storage tank with the consideration of various traffic loads using ABAQUS 2016. The finite element analysis of the FRP underground storage tank is completed under different static load conditions by selecting the element type, analyzing the boundary conditions and constraints. Compare the results of the actual test with the results of the computer simulation to analyze the similarities, differences, reasons and to evaluate the structural adequacy of underground storage tanks. The conclusions gained from the analysis are expected to provide useful guidance on the design of FRP underground storage tanks. |
