Abstract: | Alkyl nitrates (RONO₂), important reservoirs of atmospheric nitrogen, have been concerned by many scholars after proved to have effects on aerosols and ozone in the atmosphere. Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene), the most naturally emitted non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC), can react with NO₃ and produce alkyl nitrates. Because isoprene has a large presence in the atmosphere, alkyl nitrate generated from this approach cannot be ignored and is worth studying. Alkyl nitrates and gas-phase products formation from the reaction of isoprene with NO₂ and O₃ is investigated in the 6 m³ Teflon reaction chamber at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Experiment are carried out in dark and dry (30-40% relative humidity) conditions. NO₂ and O₃ is used as a source of NO₃ radicals. A detailed literature review of most kind of widely used measuring instruments is presented in this paper. After comparing applicability and limitation, proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) is appropriate for real-time detect alkyl nitrates. So, PTR-TOF-MS and chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) are used to detected alkyl nitrates and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) in this study. And the result shows that nitrogen oxides have a significant effect on the alkyl nitrates. |
