Buffer requirement for Multi-Zoned-Recording (MZR) disk in VOD serversen_US
The main challenge in implementing a VOD system is in simultaneously retrieving a big number of streams from a large-capacity storage system. In this project, the data placement, retrieving scheme, and other techniques involved in Video-On-Demand (VOD) system are studied and analyzed. Multimedia data streams are contiguous data blocks, which may represent video, audio, or other media to be retrieved simultaneously from a storage system on a real-time and on-demand basis. This bottleneck comes from the total buffer required for reading ahead data to ensure the continuity of playback. Recently, the Multi-Zone-Recording (MZR) technique has been widely applied to disk drives to exploit their capacities. Under this technique, a disk is partitioned into several logical zones with increasing track capacities. As all disks in the drive are spinning at a constant angular velocity, the outer zones also have higher data bandwidths than the inner zones. However, MZR disks also impose extra requirements in buffering. Several schemes are proposed by previous researchers in an attempt to reduce the buffer requirement. In this project, I have analyzed and compared the buffer requirements of various schemes. Performance evaluation is conducted to compare their merits in terms of their total buffer requirements. It is found that lower buffer requirement can be achieved by integrating CSCAN service order with the Compensated Region-based Data Placement technique.en_US
