| dcterms.abstract | This thesis discusses whether investing in rail transit is beneficial to low-income households and compares buses to rail transit. This thesis analyzed the travel situation of Hong Kong families in 2011, and the data source is the Travel Characteristics Survey (TCS) 2011. Due to Hong Kong's geographical factors and highly developed public transportation system, apart from a small number of wealthy families with private cars, most ordinary families and low-income families can only travel by public transportation. This thesis classifies and analyzed their bus and rail travel data by household income category, and cross-tabulates the modal decomposition data of traffic travel. This thesis also compares the speed of trips (ratio of kilometers per hour) taken by railways and buses of low-income families. Through data analysis and research, on average, the cross-tabulation of travel modes and income shows that rail transit projects meet the primary travel needs of low-income households. As far as equity of transportation is concerned, more attention should be paid on modes that are beneficial to low-income families deserve recognition, which can promote social justice. | en_US |
