dc.title | An evaluation of an industrial placement scheme on engineering students : benefits and issues | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of industrial placement on engineering degree students' learning. The target participants of the study were full time engineering degree students from a university in Hong Kong who had completed an industrial placement programme from 2000 to 2002. The total number of students included in the study was eleven. There were three specific research questions for the study. (a) Did students who had participated in the industrial placement perceived any change in their own learning and competence in terms of academic performance, technical knowledge and generic skills? (b) Was there any significant difference in the academic performance between students who had participated in the industrial placement and those who had not, as measured by their Grade Point Average (GPA) scores and grades? (c) What were the benefits, problems, challenge and support needed as perceived by students participating in the industrial placement programme? Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in the study. To answer the first and the third research questions, individual interviews were conducted to solicit the views and perceptions of the participants concerning their industrial placement experience. A statistical analysis of students' academic performance was also performed to answer the second question. A control group having the comparable academic performance in the second year was set up before the final year examination to test whether there was a significant difference in the academic results between the placement and non-placement groups after the placement. The findings suggested that most students perceived to have gained in terms of their generic skills, professional skills, and broadening of their visions in the field of building industry. Furthermore, students who had completed the industrial placement, on average performed better than their counterparts who had not in the final year 'Design Project' and final year average GPA. Obstacles and difficulties encountered by the students were also unfolded. The implications of the findings for theory and practice were discussed. | en_US |
