Study of beam column joints using non-linear finite element methoden_US
Beam column joint (BCJ) has recently received more and more research attentions both experimentally and numerically. In this project, finite element method (FEM) using ABAQUS is carried out to conduct the analysis of interior and exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joint. In order to verify the feasibility of proposed model, simple structures including one simply supported beam and one slab are used to assess the non-linear performance and convergence first. Concrete damaged plasticity and concrete smeared cracking are introduced while conducting the verification test. Two beam-column joint specimens, namely IJ-SP and EJ-SP which are under cyclic load in experiment are loaded with monotonic action in the finite element model. The numerical results are compared with experiment conducted previously at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in terms of load-deflection curve, crack pattern and concrete damage. Lastly, some suggestions for the improvement of the FEM model and the design of BCJs are discussed.en_US
