Abstract: | How countries can recover quickly from various financial crises is an important yet little explored question. The objective of this study is to empirically explore the linkage between the quality of a country's export basket, measured as export sophistication, and the speed of economic recovery from banking crises. Using cross-country data on export sophistication and banking crisis episodes between 1991 and 2014, I find that the higher the sophistication level of a country's export basket, the faster a country recovers from a banking crisis. The result is robust to a variety of control variables. Moreover, the exchange rate regime and intensity of crisis as measured by multiple crises play a role in the impact of export sophistication on the speed of recovery from banking crises. The empirical findings from this study have important policy implications. Given that export sophistication can serve as an important engine of post-crisis recovery, governments should consider policies such as investment in human capital and R&D and improvement of external liberation and foreign direct investment policies that may help promote the quality of export and thus the speed of recovery from crises. |
