| Abstract: | A recent developed instrument, the Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS), has been shown to have concurrent validity and reliability. The purpose of this study was to further evaluate the construct validity of the EMS by investigating its content-related evidence and structural evidence in assessing the mobility level of elderly patients in hospital. This research consisted of 2 parts. Part 1 was an evaluation of the representativeness, relevance and importance of items of the EMS by 7 panel members, who were clinical physiotherapists, university lecturer and clinical educator. Part 2 was an empirical investigation of the EMS. Videotaped performance of 5 hemiplegic patients completing the EMS task was scored by three raters. Inter-rater reliability of the EMS was investigated for preparation of the field test. Individual item responses for the EMS were obtained from 72 hemiplegic patients. The factor structure of the EMS was examined by factor analysis. Item analysis was used to assess the appropriateness of items of the EMS. Results from the expert panel review suggested that items of the EMS were relevant and important to elderly mobility construct. The EMS was found to represent the construct moderately. Inter-rater reliability was demonstrated by intraclass correlation coefficient (3,1). ICC for the EMS items ranged from 0.96 to 1.00. Factor analysis extracted two latent factors in the EMS. Percentage of variance of the factor one and factor two were 63.0% and 11.0% respectively. Item analysis showed that item-scale correlation for the EMS items ranged from 0.57 to 0.90. The Cronbach's alpha for the scale is 0.90. The EMS proved to be a valid instrument. Its representativeness and scoring system have to be improved. |
