| Abstract: | Changing family structure and living arrangements have made older and younger generations increasingly disconnected in Hong Kong. Lack of intergenerational communication may have detrimental effects for both generations as well as for the whole society. An intergenerational approach (IGA) is a practice for bringing generations together in mutually beneficial and purposeful activities. An IGA fosters interactions and connections between generations and to create communities that nurture and support both younger and older people. In Hong Kong, many social service sectors are trying to employ an IGA and implement different intergenerational (IG) programmes. However, no theory-based IG programme has been implemented, and few programmes have an evaluation component, particularly in regard to the effects of IG programmes on older people's multidimensional QoL issues in Hong Kong. Therefore, to address the research gap, the current study developed and implemented a theory-based IG toy programme and adopted a quasi-experimental research design to examine its effectiveness. In the programme, the participants were encouraged to play with selected toys from the Toy Library. Members of both generations were grouped with different toy settings so that they could benefit from one another while having fun. Eighty-eight elderly adults and 39 younger adults participated in the study, and the programme was implemented over a six-month period, starting from March 2019 to September 2019. The Hong Kong Quality of Life for Older Persons Scale (HKQoLOCP) instrument was used to measure the QoL of older participants, and a Chinese version of Kogan's Attitude toward Older People (KAOP) scale was used to measure the attitudes of the young adult participants towards older people. To evaluate the intervention outcomes, the outcomes of the pre-test and post-test were analysed, and a Pearson's chi-squared test, paired sample t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed. The results of this study have confirmed that an IG toy programme can significantly improve well-being, interpersonal relationships, achievement and recognition for Chinese older adults and reduce stereotypes of older people among young adults. The findings of this study can be useful resources for policymakers and social organizations, as well as for future researchers studying intergenerational issues. |
