Abstract: In recent years, with the continuous evolution of optical fiber communication technology, the demand for the transmission capacity of global communication systems is increasing every year. As the transmission capacity of the single-mode fiber is close to the limit, space-division multiplexing technology has become a significant research direction by using the few-mode fiber as the transmission medium. Therefore, with the widespread use of few-mode fibers, its mode characteristics testing method becomes essential. In this dissertation, the S2 testing system is built to test the mode dispersion and the mode coupling of the few-mode fiber. Its principle is the optical intensity at the fiber output side can change as the optical frequency, and the optical field emitted from the fiber output side is the spatial superposition of the fundamental and the high-order modes. Therefore, characteristic parameters of the few-mode fiber can be obtained by resolving the interference information of the spectrum from the superimposed optical field in space. Furthermore, the characteristics of the modes in the few-mode fiber and the process of solving the modes are discussed, including the propagation constant, mode field distribution of each mode, normalized frequency, etc. Meanwhile, the current few-mode fiber testing technology and the development of S2 testing technology are discussed. According to the principle of the S2 testing technology, the two-mode fibers with different lengths are tested. Then, the data collected from the CCD camera is processed, and different kinds of filters are applied to extract the fundamental and high-order modes of the two-mode fiber. Based on the results obtained, the mode dispersion and the mode coupling can be calculated. The mode coupling is divided into discrete and distributed mode coupling.
