Abstract: Translanguaging, in an attempt to challenge deep-rooted monolingual ideologies by focusing on the twenty-first century's new multilingual reality, has been exerting a strong influence on language education. This study intends to contribute to the body of translanguaging research by investigating a hitherto under-explored context, namely, English classrooms at Chinese secondary schools. By choosing such a context, this study also aims to expand perspectives on translanguaging in Mainland China's English language education. Specifically,this study replicates the methods implemented by Tai and Li (2020a, 2020b, 2020c). The data was collected through classroom observation (video-recorded) and semi-structured interviews (audio-recorded) and was subsequently analyzed through a combination of MCA (Multimodal Conversation Analysis) and IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis). Examples of translanguaging for instruction were identified and were classified into four kinds: transcending boundaries between named languages, co-learning process, employment of multidisciplinary knowledge, employment of multimodal resources. This paper concludes that translanguaging as a common in-class approach can help the teacher achieve their pedagogical goals. The study also analyzes conflict that the teacher encountered between monolingual ideology and multilingual reality.
