Corporate reengineering for MRPII implementationen_US
Manufacturers anywhere are faced with ever-increasing challenging situations. Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII) are two widespread tools aimed at improving quality and operation. Literature review identifies that reengineering, though sound at anecdotal contexts, does not provide practical implementation model. On the other hand, MRPII has proved to be a mature and integrated solution capable of resolving most operational issues for manufacturers. This research reasons that because implementation of MRPII always comes with structural changes in work methods and procedures, such implementation can best be viewed as a reengineering exercise in essence. Furthermore, Structured Analysis Design Technique (SADT) is helpful in designing the new system of work and procedures. This research proposes an innovative model for reengineering: to implement MRPII under a corporate reengineering context, using IDEF0 structured analysis tool to design the new hierarchical manufacturing system. Two cases from a reference company are used to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed methodology. The reengineered activities showed: 66% reduction in errors for maintaining the bills of materials system; 98.96% reduction in time to carry out material requirement planning; and 70% reduction in time previously taken for non-productive discussions. Finally, an MRPII implementation plan and guidelines are provided.en_US
