dcterms.abstract | Noise pollution is a major and urgent threat to the quality of human life [1], which refers to the excessive noise that may disrupt human or animal life [2]. A number of studies indicates that the unwanted disturbance to the environment is actually causing negative impacts on human health, in both physiological and psychological aspects [3]. Most of the noise sources in the world are mainly caused by environmental noise, such as industrial machinery, transportation systems, construction activities, and indoor noise [4]. Meanwhile, about one million citizens are affected by the excessive road traffic noise in Hong Kong, which is mainly caused by high-density urban structure due to the extremely high demand of the ever increasing population [5]. To prevent the cycle of road traffic noise impacts, noise planning in urban design is required, therefore the evaluation of influences on human perceptions is significant. In this project, both objective assessments of the road traffic noise characteristics and subjective assessments of human perceptual responses towards noises will be used to investigate the current situation in Hong Kong through psychoacoustics study [3]. For objective assessment, on-site measurement of road traffic noise at different positions from a busy road will be collected by using a sound analyzer. Common acoustic metrics of continuous equivalent noise level (Leq) and statistical indicators (Ln) will be used to describe the road traffic noise over a specified time period [4]. Follow-up laboratory experiments utilizing an anechoic chamber will be conducted. On the other hand, a subjective questionnaire survey in EPA model using the semantic differential method (SDM) will be conducted to study the effects from the road traffic noise [3]. The results obtained in this study aims to be applied in urban soundscape designing and planning. | en_US |
