Soundscape evaluation for the road traffic noiseen_US
With the rapid growth in the number of private cars in Hong Kong, the traffic noise problem has aggravated. Although quietness is an advantageous factor for an education institution, schools in Hong Kong are likely to be surrounded by major roads due to the limited land resource, and thus suffer from traffic noise, such as Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU). This paper was to conduct the soundscape evaluation of the designated site at HKPU, by using both objective and subjective methods. The soundscape evaluation was to quantify road traffic noise in the vicinity of HKPU, examine if the initial planning requirement regarding traffic noise was fulfilled, discovered the difference in perception of noise among the respondents, and determined if noise control measures are necessary for the designated site by finding out the correlation between the objective and subjective data and among the subjective data. In this soundscape evaluation, objective results illustrated that 100% of the measured LA10 and 98% of the measured LAeq (within 20m from the traffic noise source) did not comply with the relevant planning standard. However, subjective results showed that the reflection of human perception of the traffic noise was "slightly uncomfortable" and "slightly unpleasant". It was reasonable to conclude that although the traffic noise level exceeded the planning requirement, considering the extent of uncomfort and annoyance of the premise respondents, noise control measures were not required in this stage.en_US
