Abstract: | The objective of this research project is to identify the opportunities and challenges of introducing ePAM, and to develop a framework for the implementation of ePAM that spans across businesses. The research project was started by a thorough study of the evolution of maintenance management to PAM. Dimensions of PAM are identified by using MBNQA categories of assessment criteria as guidance. A new definition to PAM and a new knowledge based PAM Model are first introduced after the comparative study on maintenance/PAM models in the literature was done. Based on the proposed knowledge based PAM Model, the concept of ePAM and its dimensions are discussed. A definition of ePAM is introduced. The existing practices of the Internet and commercially available applications identified for ePAM are reviewed. The existing practices of organizations in the usage of the Internet were identified into four classifications: office automation applications, enterprise system solutions, application service provider solutions, and breakthrough systems. The practices of ePAM had been studied through site visits and interviews. Emerging web-enabled applications of ePAM identified are: collaborative design of assets, web-based condition monitoring, web-based decision making, web-based location tracking, management of MRO (maintenance, repair, and operation) materials, and knowledge management. Besides, a prognosis on future direction of ePAM solutions was made. Four new possible ePAM opportunities - collaborative PAM, web-based decision making tools, e-commissioning/e-decommissioning, and syndication of maintenance services - are identified. These opportunities had not yet been adequately addressed in today's ePAM practices. In the last phase of the research project, a Framework for implementation of ePAM was formulated. The managerial issues of ePAM initiative are examined. The major elements of the Framework are: initiate, analyze, design, implement, and maintain ePAM. The merits and perceived deficiencies of the proposed framework were validated by seeking comments from knowledgeable PAM practitioners. |
