Abstract: In this new era, due to the market competition, there is significant pressure in the Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) manufacturing industry. Most manufacturing companies are facing challenges, such as increasing product variety, small lot sizes and short delivery time, but these companies lack a suitable and practical methodology to solve such problems. The objective of this study is mainly based on an in-depth analysis of an SME OBM manufacturing company, determining the boundaries of its business model and operation process when facing the current market. Moreover, to explore the limitations in its current Make-to-Stock (MTS) and Make-to-Order (MTO) business models, and discrete and process manufacturing processes. The methodology includes applying an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model to develop a new business model: Make-To-Customisation, with a Two-phase operation process and modular design to solve the mass customisation for this SME Company. During a pilot run, the newly proposed business methodology increases product variety, reduces delivery time, and decreases the volume of the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ). As a result, it increases sales volume, reduces the delivery time of customised products and decreases stock volume. The results have proven that the new business model creates a synergic effect for the transformation of business opportunities and improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the operation. The significance of this research is the establishment of an innovative and practical new business model and operation process for the SME OBM manufacturing industry to solve the problems in producing different degrees of customised products in mass customisation. After a pilot run of the proposed business model, it also provides the capability to increase product variety, reduces delivery time and decreases the volume of MOQ. The results show that sales volume increases and surplus decreases. Moreover, it has been found that the selling price, delivery time and MOQ are key factors that affect the purchasing behaviour among the standard, slightly, and partially different customised products. It also provides a clear roadmap for exploratory and cost-effective solutions for other SME manufacturing companies to achieve continuous improvement of their business models.
