| dcterms.abstract | This study aims to explore the informal support network among female-headed single parent families in Hong Kong. Two widows and one divorcee were interviewed. All respondents have children studying in primary school and have become single mothers for 2 to 4 years. A qualitative research method with in-depth individual interviews was adopted to collect data. All interviews followed semi-structured guide and data were analyzed inductively. Findings of the study reflect experience of single mothers as being both stressful and growth-promoting. While the informal support network was identified as a source of support to single mothers, its dysfunctions should not be overlooked. The result also indicates tendency of single mothers to strive for self-reliance although they might seek help in time of need. The study finally discuss implications for social services and social work practitioners, namely coordinating social services to support female-headed single parent families, the intergration of formal and informal resources, the use of informal network in social work intervention, and the promotion of gender-sensitive practice as well as culturally-sensitive practice. | en_US |
