| dcterms.abstract | In the world of computer networking, many different protocols exists. In order to communicate with one another, different computer systems have to adopt the same protocol. Originally, most of the protocols for networking are proprietary and owned by the vendor who developed the protocol. Nowadays, protocols are becoming more open and some of the them have become standards. This makes possible the communication between computer systems manufactured by different vendors. It is very common that a computer system supports more than one protocol for networking. For example, Microsoft's Windows NT can support both IPX/SPX and TCP/IP. This makes communication easier, but at the same time, creates some problems for the network administrator. He/She has to choose one of the protocol that is more suitable for their environment. Sometimes, it is difficult to make such a decision without knowing the difference between these protocols. IPX/SPX and TCP/IP are two commonly used protocols. Many operating systems such as Windows NT, Netware and OS/2 are supporting these two protocols at the same time. In this project, a thorough comparison of IPX/SPX and TCP/IP protocols will be made. Several aspects of these two protocols will be compared and analyzed using different approaches. The result of this comparison will be useful for a network administrator to choose a suitable protocol, plan and maintain his/her network. | en_US |
