dcterms.abstract | "Integrated River Trade Logistics" (IRTL) is a multi-modal logistics system consisting sea-land-air different mode of transportation activities. Physical cargo distribution includes mid-stream operations, river trade and feeder services, land transport and a part of airfreight transportation. This system will enhance Hong Kong's competitive advantage against the Peal River Delta in the Guangdong province. This dissertation illustrates how the "Integrated River Trade Logistics" (IRTL) has changed business ability to reach out and form partnerships that might have been nearly impossible in the past. The company in this case, Eastern Worldwide Company Limited (EWCL), was the leader of the management team and had strong history within the logistics industry. It became the spiritual leader of the group and continues to nurture the vision. The business vision of the EWCL team was one of added-value through consolidation. EWCL felt that they could bring together a number of companies, and all of whom had known each other for years. The companies were motivated to join a large group so they could have access to the combined resources and economies of scale resulting from the shared services of a large group. It is important to note that the IT system (EDI) and Just-in-time (JIT) ultimately allowed EWCL to significantly reduce its cost of operations, speed up the flow of information internally, on time delivery and provide much better customer service.
