dcterms.abstract | All construction project managers need to be able to track and control their projects. To do this they have traditionally used a variety of management techniques, coupled to intuitive judgment in the operation of their sites. In addition, the use of computer based network tools (CPM and Precedence Diagrams) are now common and it is therefore a relatively simple task to review target (baseline) schedules against actual (data date) schedules. In this way, it is possible to determine whether (i) targets (in terms of time and cost) have been met; (ii) individual activities are slipping; or (iii) milestones will be missed. However, by solely tracking progress in terms of time it is very difficult to determine whether the slippage is critical, or what has caused the slippage. Nor do we know what effect these changes will have on the overall budget for the project. Consequently, it is necessary to review costs as well as time if the project manager is to understand the progress of work on the site. This is where the concept of earned value analysis can be useful in the construction industry. This dissertation critically examine project management planning and control for the installation and commissioning of the building services in large project using a case study approach. The project will use Hong Kong New Airport as an example to illustrate the advantages of using the technique of earned value in project management. | en_US |
