A study on the application of Internet commerce for the building and construction industry in Hong Kongen_US
Internet Commerce is a very hot topic in recent years. Although the application is very common in many industries, the move of the building and construction industry is lagging behind. This research investigates the applicable areas of Internet Commerce for the building and construction industry in Hong Kong. Interviews are conducted with members of the construction team and their views solicited. A survey targeted on all the contractors in Hong Kong is also conducted. Five main applicable areas are identified. According to ranking of importance and application urgency from the survey results, they are: (1) Project Management and Control, (2) Communication and Collaboration, (3) Electronic Tendering, (4) Marketing and Advertising, and (5) Supply Chain Management. Our findings suggest that although in general, the industry is aware of the benefits attainable from the application of I-Commerce, the movement is low. The main issues of application concern are the security over the Internet and resistance due to existing industry and organization culture. The requirements, design and architecture, etc of a representative Web-enables Project Management and Control system are outlined. Finally, the limitations and future research directions are stated.en_US
