dcterms.abstractStimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a non-linear effect that dominates at high-power narrow linewidth laser. Since high-power laser can have a longer range of detection in LIDAR application, it is important to increase the SBS threshold in order to achieve higher output power. The objectives of this project are to study the SBS effect in different kinds of optical fibers and to increase the SBS threshold by tapering the delivery fiber of high-power narrow linewidth pulsed amplifier operating at 1.55µm. The performances of the fiber laser without tapered fiber and that with tapered fiber are compared experimentally. The delivery fiber under tested is a large diameter fiber (LDF) with core diameter of 25 µm and cladding diameter of 300 µm. The variation in core/cladding diameter ratio and the variation in up and down taper length are studied respectively. The tapered fiber with waist diameter of 100 µm was found to increase the SBS threshold by 10%. Among the experimental data, the best up and down taper length was found to be 12.5 mm.en_US
