Abstract: Purpose - The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the impact of Digital Twins (DT) implementation in the Construction Industry under Covid-19, to facilitate the development and utilization of this new technology in the Hong Kong Construction Industry through an exploratory analysis.
Design/methodology/approach - A study in the literature review related to DT implementation in the global market to understand the concept, utilization rate, pros and cons of DT. Mixed research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative research, were adopted and carried out to collect the data from the Hong Kong Construction Industry personnel via phone interviews and online questionnaire survey, with an emphasis on the background, descriptions of application and interface of DT collaborative platform.
Findings - According to the analysis of findings, the framework of the DT guideline for the Hong Kong Construction Industry under Covid-19 has been developed. The research findings presented the recognition level and utilization rate of DT implementation in Hong Kong, the experience of using DT under Covid-19, the willingness to use DT in the future and suggestions for DT implementation to enhance the efficiency of the construction process.
Practical implications – The establishment of the DT guideline and DT model to show the interoperability functionality and present the real-time interpretation and decision-making support of complex building systems development in the construction projects according to the cognitive capabilities of DT.
Originality/value - The research explores the usage and the application of DT in different aspects against the issue in the construction projects caused by Covid-19. The studies described how the DT model collaboratively integrates the real-time raw data and information through the Internet of things (IoT) and data exchange system during the whole project life cycle. The framework of DT guidelines and the DT model is the tool for the government to standardize the workflow of DT implementation and the requirement of the DT model and data exchange systems.
