Abstract: | Studies show that built environment and social environment have a direct bearing on the development of sense of place. Sense of place illuminates the affective bonds between people and place, which benefits residents' mental health and wellbeing. Existing studies mostly focus on one-dimensional pathway with either built environment or social environment as a single predictor of sense of place. It is worth attention to explore the multilevel relationship between built environment, social environment, and sense of place. Moreover, studies fail to consider the role of both objective and perceived environment in determining sense of place, as these two environmental factors may lead to contrasting outcomes. Accordingly, this dissertation aims to fill the gap by identifying the effects of objective built environment and perceived built environment on sense of place. Based on a survey of residents in affordable housing in Guangzhou, this dissertation explored the pathways linking objective built environment, perceived built environment, social environment and sense of place. In addition, it examined the mediation effect of social environment using structural equation modeling. The results showed that perceived built environment is positively associated with sense of place. Road density and building density had negative direct effects on sense of place, but positively indirect impact on sense of place through perceived built environment. Although land use mix showed no significant direct effect on sense of place, the positive indirect and total effect between building density and sense of place existed, which means that land use mix had a positive total association with sense of place through the role of perceived built environment and neighborhood relationship. Neighborhood relationship can mediate the associations between perceived built environment and sense of place, while the mediating role of social participation did not exist. The study has several implications for planning of affordable housing. First, urban planning should pay more attention on the layout of public services facilities, public open space and green space around the neighborhood living circle. Second, while improving the accessibility and transport, attention should be paid to aspects such as neighborhood walkability and safety as friendly pedestrians' environment could enhance social interaction. Third, the scale of road density, building density and land use mix should be taken into consideration while improving the convenience and accessibility of built environment. Last, it is quite important to nurture the neighborhood relationship as the study shows that neighborhood relationship plays a key role in determining sense of place. |
