Use of biodiesel for carbon emission reduction of construction equipment in Hong Kongen_US
This dissertation aims to assess the carbon reduction contribution of replacing conventional diesel with biodiesel in the Hong Kong construction sector, which will promote the usage of biodiesel in the construction sector and the establishment of related policy. Strategies of reducing carbon emission of construction equipment are discussed, and regulations regarding carbon reduction targets and biodiesel usage are reviewed globally. The contribution of replacing diesel with B5 biodiesel in the construction industry in Hong Kong is evaluated using 2 methods: the lifecycle emission factor defined in the EU Directive and the CDM ACM0017 methodology. A 32,000 tCO2e reduction, i.e., a 4.5% reduction in the construction sector could be achieved, and in the biodiesel project, the production plant contributes the most emission (90.3%), followed by that of methanol (9.87 %). The limitations of the calculation mainly come from the unavailability of accurate material consumption data and resource information, and the simplifying of some elements in the project. Recommendations are proposed based on the results, and the study plays a role in promoting Hong Kong to establish the carbon reduction target for the construction industry and complete related policies on the use of biodiesel.en_US
