Abstract: With the rapid development of Mainland China and Hong Kong, the economic and cultural cooperation between the two places has started to increase, and construction works play a vital role as one of the important pillars in both economies. However, in the process of calculating the quantity of building construction works, the calculator tends to calculate the quantity of the works based on the rules for calculating the quantity of works stipulated in the region, therefore, when different calculation rules are adopted, even the same building construction works may be calculated with different quantities of works. In the current situation, the use of two different pricing and measurement and contracting systems for construction works in mainland China and Hong Kong has led to obstacles in the actual construction of the two, making it difficult to cooperate in construction works. In this paper, we will study the differences in the quantities of construction works caused by the use of different rules for calculating quantities in housing construction projects in mainland China and Hong Kong, analyze the rules for calculating quantities in the two places, compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the different rules, and look for the reasons for the differences in quantities and costs. This study can be used as a reference for quantity surveying related practitioners in both Mainland China and Hong Kong.
