dcterms.abstractThis paper focuses on the development of a data warehouse to fulfill the information needs for the effective delivery of major human resources functions such as recruitment, staff cost management and benefits administration etc. The data warehouse will be built utilizing data generated from transaction processing systems that support the routine human resources operations including payroll generation, staff recording, and claims processing etc. The whole development process will put emphasis on two aspects of the data warehousing technology: the data model at the back end and the use of on-line analytical tool at the front end of the data warehouse. Other aspects of data warehousing, such as designing the extraction processes for populating the data warehouse and designing aggregations and precalculations, will only he briefly described. Apart from the above-mentioned, other data warehousing concepts including physical architecture of the data warehouse, the design of metadata and the daily administration of the warehouse are out of the scope of this paper. This paper will use the case of a bank to illustrate the development process. The background of the case will be introduced first and the information needs for human resources management in the bank will be discussed. Based on these information requirements and the data available in the operational human resources system, a data model will be developed using the Star Schema, which is a prevailing data modeling technique for data warehousing. To illustrate how the proposed data model and the online analytical processing tool interact to support human resources management decision making, a prototype of the recommended data warehouse will be developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the data warehouse and the operational system in supporting data analysis will be compared.en_US
