Abstract: As an emerging technological innovation, Building Information Modeling (BIM) can facilitate the innovation of construction industry and it has been wildly applied in practice. It is necessary for various stakeholders to analyze its research progress and development trend. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was conducted to provide an accurate and objective conclusion for BIM knowledge based on 1640 BIM-related publications. Citespace and VOSviewer software are used to draw the mapping knowledge domains. The results demonstrate that the research of BIM still grows rapidly. Emerging hotspots in the BIM research domain include but are not limited to BIM implementation, life cycle assessment, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), point cloud, digital twin, geographic information systems (GIS), augmented reality (AR), and safety. The results are valuable to identify clusters and themes of the BIM research field. Furthermore, the summary can help recognize the development of BIM research in a time span, thus significantly contributing to understand the fundamental framework of BIM. This study provides useful theoretical and practical insights for the future BIM knowledge development.
