Abstract: A great amount of electric generation plant is currently using fossil fuel as the energy source, which will lead to the problem of shortage on fossil fuel and environmental impact. The application on sustainable energy for electrical generation has been developing worldwide for solving the problem. In Hong Kong, solar, wind, hydro power and waste energy have been studied and to be developed in Hong Kong area. This paper suggested a type of ocean electric powered costal building that can be developed in Hong Kong areas through simulation projects. Different ocean energy generation methods were studied to suggest the wave and tidal energy be the ocean generation method to be adopted in Hong Kong. The simulation model of the ocean energy generation system was developed using "TRNSYS". The 40 floor "Standard block Harmony 1 (Option 1)" residential building was chosen as the costal building to be develop in Hong Kong; For the type of generation devices, oscillating water column is suggested to convert wave energy to electric energy, and vertical axis tidal stream turbine was suggested to convert tidal energy to electric energy; Telsa power pack was chosen as the energy storage system. The costal building location was suggested at Yi Chuen, and the wave data and the tidal data were collected in Kau Yi Chau and Kap Shui Mun respectively. Simulations were conducted in the simulation model by varying the number of device and using different types of oscillating water column model.
The obtained results of each case were analysis through matching analysis and economic analysis, which was to analysis the reliability and worthiness of the project respectively. Among the cases that have been simulated, the case used 23 units of 250kwh vertical axis tidal stream turbine and 2 2000kwh OWC to generate power gave the best energy consume proportion; the case used 21 units of 250kwh vertical axis tidal stream turbine and 4 units of 1500kwh OWC to generate power gave the best energy coverage; the case used 3 units 3000kwh OWC gave the best payback period and the net present value after 25 years. By comparing the three cases, the comparison suggested that adopting the case used 3000 kwh OWC takes a greater advantage when comparing the other case. To conclude, the generation system used 3 units 3000 kwh oscillating water column was suggested to be the 40 floor "Standard block Harmony 1 (Option 1)" costal residential building to be developed in Hong Kong areas, where the system had a payback period of less than 13 years with a net present value of 154626829.9HKD after the useful life time of the generation device.
