dcterms.abstract | The quality of institution is widely recognized as one of the key factors in driving growth and development. Recent studies also show that an institution plays a crucial role in global value chain (GVC) activities. In this dissertation, I construct a proxy of the pattern of GVC participation, capturing both the changes in backward and forward GVC linkages. I empirically examine the relationship between institutional quality and backward GVC participation and the GVC participation pattern (GVCPP) at both national and sectoral levels. By using the Multi-Region Input-Output table (MRIO) and Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) datasets, I discover that institutional quality is positively related to the backward GVC participation and GVCPP, both at national and sectoral levels. The discoveries are robust to different data sources and methods. Surprisingly, I also find that contract-intensive sectors in countries with better quality institutions have lower backward GVC participation levels. I provide some potential explanations for the observed patterns. | en_US |
