Abstract: Saline water, namely salt water or flush water, is to be designated as a coolant to dissipate the heat generated by water-cooled air-conditioning systems. The principal behind is similar to district cooling system. However, district cooling system provides chilled water to a certain number of buildings in the vicinity in a district, which has been commonly used for high efficiency and economic performance. In subtropical city, such as Hong Kong, is deemed as a potential area where can demonstrate great performance for district cooling. For saline water cooling system, it aims to serve individual small building where is not easily to adopt sea water cooling, or temporary building like interim houses, or premises with temporary lease. Therefore, saline water cooling system was proposed to be an alternative high efficiency air conditioning system for the aforementioned situations.
The saline water will be taken from upper stream of saline water main in streets and then discharged back to lower stream of it without any loss of saline water in the close loop plumbing routing. Compare to conventional air-cooled air-conditioning systems, the proposed one has significantly higher coefficient of performance (CoP). What is more, compared to conventional water-cooled chiller system with cooling tower for heat rejection, firstly, it will not consume condensing water from evaporation, overflow, or splashing, etc. Secondly, it will not cause Legionnaires' Disease due to the close plumbing loop design. Last but not least, it will occupy less spatial area since no cooling tower or chemical dosing system is required.
This dissertation is to explore the feasibility of adopting Saline Water Cooling System in Hong Kong from different aspects, namely engineering calculation, mechanical design, equipment selection, energy simulation, and operation & monitoring.
