An exploratory study of the critical capabilities of original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Areaen_US
China has been ranked as the world's largest exporter since 2009 and has surpassed the United States as the world's largest trading nation from 2013. However, the unprecedented trade war between China and the United States leads to the increase in costs of sourcing and production of the entire production processes in China, which forces original equipment manufacturers in the Pearl River Delta region to count on low-margin product assembly and focus on labor-intensive production methods, including but not limited to original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry, that resulting to even more competitive challenges and severer competitions among original equipment manufacturers in China, particularly in the Pearl River Delta region, under the Sino-American trade war. On the other hand, the stable growth of global demand for and trading of electrical home appliance products which directs an obvious and significant increase in sales revenue and volume of the industry that further signifies the continual importance of the industry to the global industrial and trading markets as a whole.en_US
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (the Greater Bay Area) is a national initiative aims to transforming the Pearl River Delta region into a 'world-class city cluster' covering nine cities, with Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the Guangdong Province and the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau as the spearhead. The upgrade of the Pearl River Delta industrial sector, also covering the electrical home appliance industry, is one of the core components of the entire initiative and plan of the Greater Bay Area. On this basis, the identification of the critical capabilities of original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area shall help these manufacturers explore and deploy the most optimal corporate and operational strategies and tactics to prioritize and allocate scarce resources to improve their organizational performances and business excellences, and ultimately ensure sustainable competitive edges for the sake of developing, maintaining and enhancing the continuous growth and expansion of the Greater Bay Area. For this purpose, this study first conducted an extensive literature review of previous and extant studies from generic and industry-specific (manufacturing and original equipment manufacturing) perspectives to identify and develop the nine initial constructs of critical capabilities applicable to and the six initial constructs of organizational performance measures pertinent to original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area for further analysis.en_US
This study adopted structured survey questionnaire to collect primary data from the targeted respondent firms drawn from original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area at organizational level and cross-sectionally. The survey design refers to the survey instrument containing survey questions as transformed from the identified measurement indicators under the respective initial construct of critical capabilities applicable to and organizational performance measures pertinent to original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area based on the extensive literature review of previous and extant studies from generic and industry-specific (manufacturing and original equipment manufacturing) perspectives, and with reference to the real-world business contexts and situations of original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area. Furthermore, this study also adopted and conducted two main statistical tests, including (1) Exploratory Factor Analysis to determine and define the new sets of factor-models representing the potential critical capabilities applicable to and organizational performance measures pertinent to original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliances at the Greater Bay Area, and then followed by (2) Multiple Regression Analysis to examine and predict the relationships and associations between the potential critical capabilities and organizational performance measures of this study in order to identify the critical capabilities of original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliances at the Greater Bay Area and their organizational performance implications. Finally, this study conducted a case study of Raymond Industrial Limited (HKSE: 0229) to further validate, triangulate and enrich the statistical results of this study from practical application perspective.en_US
Based on the statistical results obtained from Exploratory Factor Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis, this study identified six critical capabilities, namely Human Resource Management Capability, Dynamic Capability, Quality Management Capability, Organizational Learning Capability, Technological and Innovative Capability and Supply Chain Capability, which are significantly and positively associated with five organizational performance measures, relating to Personnel Performance, Marketing Performance, Financial Performance, Product and Service Quality Performance and Operational Performance, at different levels and extents of significance. Among the six identified critical capabilities, Human Resource Management is found to be the most prominent critical capability of original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area as it is significantly and positively associated with all the five identified organizational performance measures as identified by this study.en_US
This study is the first attempt of its kind to conduct a thorough and comprehensive approach to holistically review and analyze critical capabilities and organizational performance measures with a special focus on original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area, which provides both theoretical implications to academic researchers and practical implications to industry practitioners. From academic perspective, this study enriches the body of theoretical knowledge and academic studies of critical capabilities and organizational performance measures, as well as the relationships among them, especially in a common manufacturing approach (original equipment manufacturers) of a specific business sector (electrical home appliance industry) for an emerging geographical location (the Greater Bay Area). From the practical standpoint, this study shed lights to the industry practitioners of original equipment manufacturers in the electrical home appliance industry at the Greater Bay Area to nurture, maintain and enhance their specific and particular sets of critical capabilities on the basis to formulate and deploy business and operational strategies and tactics to seize business opportunities and cope with challenges in order to maintain long-term organizational performances and sustainable growths.en_US
