dcterms.abstract | Due to the dynamic characteristic of the power system such as arc resistance, earth fault resistance and mutual coupling effect of parallel lines, the performance of distance relays can vary. These errors are influenced by the actual power system condition. Although accounted for by using a large safety margin in the zone boundaries, unexpected over-reach/under-reach can occur and the operation speed is affected. Adaptive protection offers an approach to compensate for the influence by the variable power system conditions. By adapting the relay settings to the actual power system condition, the relay will respond more accurately to power system faults. The selectivity of the protection system is increased, as well as the power system reliability. This thesis presents the development an adaptive digital distance protection scheme with an adaptive zero sequence compensation factor applied on the finite Fourier Transform Algorithm. Real-time simulation shows that the protective relay possess very high sensitivity and selectivity. The use of a moving average technique further improves the performance. | en_US |
