Abstract: The aging population has generated new challenges for the tourism industry, and theme parks, as vital places for families to spend meaningful time together, should enhance the experience of its senior visitors by improving the quality of their services. This study aims to uncover significant factors that influence the theme park experience of older adults in China, as well as to investigate and evaluate the gap between the importance of existing services and satisfaction at theme parks. After conducting a literature survey, the theoretical foundation for this paper was generated from previously defined theme park characteristics and broadened to create a research framework. A questionnaire was distributed to a club of elderly retirees to indicate their expectation on theme park service and to assess their experiences in one of the five theme parks in Beijing. An importance-satisfaction analysis was conducted to investigate the difference between Chinese senior visitors’ expectations and satisfaction of their theme park experience. This analysis revealed that Chinese older adults place a high value on family-related rides and attractions, and that the five theme parks chosen for the survey exhibited high importance but low satisfaction in related services.
A multiple linear regression analysis was also conducted to assess the impact of their satisfaction of the different dimensions of their theme park experience on their overall satisfaction of their theme park experience and their intention to visit theme parks in the future. The results revealed that the factors influencing the satisfaction of the elderly were (a) the quality and diversity of rides and attractions; (b) courtesy, cleanliness, safety, and security; and (c) accessibility and auxiliary facilities. A linear regression analysis was undertaken to determine the effect of increasing overall satisfaction on senior visitors’ desire to return to the theme park, however the results indicated that as overall satisfaction increased, senior visitors’ intention to revisit the theme park declined.
