Abstract: The main objectives of this research are to explore the existing training and learning environments in the hotel industry in Greater China and identify whether a corporate university is an effective tool and able to help improve job efficiency and retain good people for hotels. Hotels could then obtain competitive advantages and successfully achieve their business goals.
The research adopted the qualitative methodology. Thirty hotel samples were selected, and the semistructured interview approach was used. The research provides (a) comprehensive information from a general review of the current learning resources of the hotel industry in Greater China, (b) a view of the level of understanding on the corporate university concept among people working in hotels, and (c) an in-depth study on the process and operation of a corporate university, including the challenges faced and the solutions to these challenges. In addition, a “make or buy” approach to corporate universities applications was also explored. A comparison of Eastern and Western learning culture was discussed and analyzed with those participants who had a good knowledge of the corporate university concept.
The findings indicated that corporate university practice is applicable for hotels in Greater China. A new corporate university model specifically for the hotel industry in Greater China, with a foundation provided by the generic corporate university wheel conceptual framework developed by Prince and Stewart (2002, p. 805), is proposed. The research not only provides detailed guidance for hotel practitioners on how to establish and operate a corporate university effectively but also contributes to the theory on strategic management and human resources management.
