Leisure travel motivations of gay men from Mumbai metropolitan region : the travel career patterns approachen_US
This research studies the travel motivations of gay men from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in India to go on vacation using the Travel Career Patterns (TCP) model. The study also compares these motivations with tourists from other regions of the world found using the TCP model. It also explores if motivations change with travel experience. The survey used convenience sampling methods to gather data of 436 respondents who primarily belong to a middle and high-income category possessing high educational qualifications.en_US
The exploratory factor analysis resulted in five factors whose order of importance matched though their exact ranking did not. The respondents were divided into two groups of travel career levels, one high and the other low, based on age and travel experience to determine if the motivations differed. Independent samples t-test did not show any significant differences in motivations between the two travel career groups. A new component entitled “degree of openness”, which meant the degree to which gay men were open to reveal their sexual identity to others, was added to age and travel experience to create new high and low openness and travel career levels. The degree of openness was hypothesised to reflect the level of comfort a gay man has about his sexual identity and does not hinder his travel choices. Independent samples t-test revealed significant differences in factors of self-development/enhancement (personal) and self-development with characteristics of destination in the two openness and travel career groups.en_US
