Abstract: As electric arc fault causes fire, detection systems and algorithms are needed to reduce the number of fire caused by electric arc fault. However, the dataset of AC series arc fault is not large enough for the development of high accuracy detection system. Therefore, the dataset of AC series arc fault should be enlarged. In order to enlarge the dataset, experiments were conducted to examine the relationship between the load and the arc feature shown in the current waveform. Three arc features were presented and used for comparisons, including flat shoulders, blur phenomenon and spike pulse. There were variables in the experiment, including the type of load, number of load in the circuit and testing points where the arc fault happens. Six loads were included in the experiment, which were LED lamp, compact fluorescent lamp, hair dryer, drill, kettle and mini oven. For number of load in the circuit, there were three conditions, one load, two loads, and three loads. For testing points, it determined the number and also the combinations of arcing load in the circuit. 76 combinations were tested in the experiment. From the result of the experiment, it showed that the arc feature appeared in the current waveform has a direct relationship with the load. The main circuit arc fault waveform showed majority of arc feature from the loads. The branch circuit arc fault waveform seemed to be showing the arc feature from the arcing load only. Moreover, a new phenomenon was discovered. The results of the experiment showed that the arc feature spike pulse disappears when the lighting load is not the only arcing load in the circuit, the question of whether other loads is responsible for the missing of spike pulse from the lighting load or not was raised. Apart from experiment, virtual models presented by researchers were also verified in this dissertation. MATLAB was used in the virtual model simulation. The arc feature generated by model was found matching with the experiment, but the accuracy of the model seemed to be not enough for large scale data collection as real-life conditions such as fluctuations was not considered in the model.
