The impact of multilingualism and studying abroad on personality profiles of Chinese postgraduatesen_US
The present research project investigates the relationship between multilingualism, the experience of studying abroad and personality profiles of 80 Chinese postgraduate students as measured by the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). Two subgroups were included, students who were studying in mainland China and those studying in the regions outside mainland China. Participants who were studying abroad including Hong Kong (China) scored higher on Cultural Empathy and Open-mindedness than those studying in mainland, but lower on the dimension of Emotional Stability. There was no significant difference between the number of foreign languages known by respondents and their MPQ personality traits. Besides, Individuals who have greater understanding of foreign languages was linked to higher scores on Cultural Empathy, Flexibility, and Open-mindedness, but lower scores on Social Initiative. These findings supported the idea that some personality qualities were influenced by a person's language background, level of multilingualism, and social environment.en_US
